Why Giving Back is Key to My Brand

I’ve been looking forward to getting back to blogging so that I can better connect with business rock stars like you! I’m changing up the focus of my blog and from now on I’ll be writing more about design, branding, self-development and entrepreneurship. For today’s post, I can’t wait to share the mission of Laurelizabrown Designs: Bringing design and giving together.
When people hear about my mission, they want know more. Why do I do it? Where did I get the idea? How do I decide which organizations to give to? And more.
And I love sharing the purpose behind Laurelizabrown’s mission! Let’s dive right in, shall we? :)
It all started with some shoes.
Well, actually it started with some shoes from TOMS, an incredible company you’ve probably heard of. Back when I was in high school, I discovered TOMS Shoes and my outlook on business changed forever.
I’d always been into volunteering everywhere from animal shelters to organizations that served kids with intellectual disabilities. But I had no idea that a for-profit company’s purpose could be centered around giving back, and I was inspired. From then on, I had dreams of working for a company centered around giving, similar to TOMS and other companies like Sevenly.
Then one day I decided to do something even bigger: start my own business that was focused on giving. And so I did!
Now I get to combine the two things I’m most passionate about: design and giving back. My clients get a new brand, a new website, or other design package, and donate to a cause they’re passionate about, all in one place.
I knew I wanted to give people a sense of community and hope.
Hopelessness is one of the worst feelings a person can have, and it affects so many of us.
Growing up, I felt hopeless, too.
Back in 1995, my twin brothers were diagnosed with severe autism. Autism wasn’t well understood back then, and the doctors told my parents they couldn't offer us much help.
One doctor even told us my brothers would have to be institutionalized. It was unbelievably heartbreaking for my family.
Now, over 20 years later, there is hope for people with autism and their families because nonprofits and charities have raised funds for groundbreaking research. The huge strides the world is making towards understanding autism offers a life-changing sense of hope for my family and me!
The sense of community and awareness these foundations have created also gives me such a sense of belonging. It feels like I’m not in this alone anymore.
I want to give people that same sense of community and hope when they purchase design packages from my company.
Turns out, a mission-driven business also attracts the most incredible, generous clients!
It’s such a gift to wake up every day and work with clients who are so enthused about contributing to the world around them. They feel great about investing in design projects for their own businesses because they’re also investing in causes that really mean something to them.
My clients know their money will keep helping others long after they’ve invested in their new brand and website.
I did my research to find the best of the best.
When I was deciding which charities and nonprofits to support through my business, I consulted trusted sources like Guidestar and Charity Navigator to come up with a list of organizations that were honest, verified, and transparent about how their donations are used.
It’s very, very important to me that my clients’ money goes to organizations that contribute to the cause directly. And I’m just getting started, because there are so many worthy causes out there! My plan is to expand this list as the company grows, and to increase the percentage donated to give back even more.
