6 Web Design Tips To Make Your Ideal Client Feel At Home

Today I’m pulling back the curtain on some simple web design tips that can mean the difference between your ideal client clicking away ASAP, and your future favorite client settling in to read your blog, scroll through your portfolio, and clicking that buy button.

When I work with clients on their websites, I start by mapping out the site to ensure that the layout is simple and intuitive. Then, I add in all of the elements of their new brand (their logo, style guide, etc.). I dive right in and create a welcoming website that’s sure to lead to sign ups and sales.

But how do you create a site that’s simple and intuitive? Here are some tips that even beginners can put to good use in no time. Enjoy! :)

1. Make sure your site’s navigation is easy to understand.

Keep it simple! Put your primary navigation (that means the most important links) in the horizontal menu bar at the top of your site. Place your secondary navigation options (the less-important links) right under the primary navigation menu or on the sidebar.

As much as I love to encourage creativity, navigation is not a place on your website where you want to think too far outside the box. If your visitors can’t immediately understand how to get around on your website, they’ll be clicking away before they can see how wonderful you are!

2. Keep your site clutter-free.

If your website is your digital home, just assume you’re expecting lots of important guests to pop over at any time. Because you are, right? So keep your digital home free of clutter that can distract your website visitors.

Make sure your pages don’t have several calls to action—that’s sure to make them feel overwhelmed. Also keep in mind your pages don’t need tons of graphics, photos, and gifs to be effective.

When it doubt, less is more! Make sure your site has plenty of white space to give your visitors some digital breathing room. You could even move all of your links to the header and footer of your site for a crisp, clean experience.

When you’re writing content for your site, keep your paragraphs short. A single paragraph should have 5-6 lines, tops! It keeps things easy on the eyes.

3. Use your colors wisely.

Remember when you chose your brand colors when you were creating your style guide? Now it’s time to put those powerful colors to work! (And if you’d like to create a style guide now, I’ve got a FREE template for you to get started!)

Use your more neutral colors generously and save your bolder shades for strategic pops of color. Those bright colors are perfect for important graphics, headlines, or links. Keep it cohesive and stick to those signature brand colors!

4. Skip the low-quality photos.

There’s no excuse for yucky, fuzzy photos anymore! Your website needs unique and eye-catching images to create an emotional connection with your visitors.

There are tons of great places to buy high-quality stock photos these days. But other options are taking them yourself or spending some extra time hunting down free-but-awesome stock photos from places like Pixabay, Unsplash, Life of Pix, and more.

The process of finding photos that elevate your brand can take a little time, but it’s completely worth it! Generic-looking photos just won’t do for a brand as special as yours. :)

5. Think of every page as a landing page.

It can be natural to assume that every website visitor will start out on your homepage, maybe click over to your about page, then maybe over to your blog. But your homepage isn’t a front door, and your website visitors could start out on any of the pages of your site! So make sure no matter what page they’re on, they’ll still have all the information to be able to tell you who you, what you do, and what you can offer them that no one else can.

6. Make your site’s buttons super-clickable.

Whether it’s the button for your call to action or your contact form, make it enticing to click! When a website visitor hovers over one of your buttons, it can change color, gradient, opacity or even fonts. Make it fun for them!

Remember, it’s all about them.

You might think your website looks amazing (and it probably does!), but what’s most important is that your ideal clients find it irresistible. They should identify with it so strongly that they can get you get them, and they can’t help but buy what you’re selling!
